How Do I Start Working on a Merit Badge?

  1. You don't have to wait for a workshop.
  2. Pick the Merit Badge that interests you.
  3. Look up the requirements - get the current Boy Scout Requirements Book from the Scout Shop or go to www.meritbadge.com
  4. Print out the Merit Badge Requirements Workbook from meritbadge.com/worksheets/
  5. Ask an ASM for a signed Merit Badge Card.
  6. Ask Mrs. Pietruszka for the name and phone number of a few counselors.
  7. Call the counselor before starting work to see if the counselor wants to meet first.
  8. Alway use the buddy system when meeting with the counselor. Your buddy can be a parent, fellow scout, friend, etc.
  9. Thoroughly complete each requirement.
  10. If you need adult help or advice, ask a parent, ASM, or other knowledgable person.

If your Patrol or a group of scouts wants to work on a badge . . .

  1. Pick one that interests all of you.
  2. Follow steps 1-6 above.
  3. Pick one person to contact the counselor . Ask the counselor when he or she would like meet with your group in order to complete the badge.
  4. Create a plan for getting the requirements done. Some requirements can be done at troop meetings, but some may have to be done at home (as a group or individually).
  5. Ask an ASM for help or supervison as needed.
  6. If you are working during a meeting . . . BE PREPARED to work.
